The New Jersey Black Women Physicians Association (NJBWPA), is a nonprofit organization and network of Black women physicians dedicated to advocacy and the elimination of healthcare disparities within communities of color and other vulnerable populations. We form partnerships within the community to provide mentorship, education and healthcare navigation. Our goal is to impact health equity.

Our Executive Board

Our team of board-certified physicians serve to define and protect NJBWPA’s mission. They oversee and implement strategy development, outreach, advocacy, and change management.

Pamela Brug, MD, MS
FOUNDER + PRESIDENT

Dr. Pamela Brug, MD, MS is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist in New Jersey and is affiliated with Hackensack Meridian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center. She received her medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and has been in practice for more than 25 years. Dr. Brug is on the faculty of Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences. She also serves as faculty in the Division for Advocacy and Outreach at the Rutgers-RWJMS Women’s Health Institute. She has received several awards throughout her career. Her interest in disparities in health care has led her to address black maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, especially in New Jersey.

Toni Otway,MD       
VICE PRESIDENT

Dr. Toni Otway, MD is a board-certified OB/GYN currently residing in New Jersey. Her undergraduate degree in biology was completed at Florida Atlantic University. She completed medical school at the University of Miami and residency at Staten Island University Hospital. After residency, she went into private practice serving the community on Staten Island. There she also worked closely with organizations that provided medical care for the uninsured. She is currently a medical director for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with several organizations to help promote education and wellness for women, especially in communities of color. She recently joined New Jersey Black Women Physicians Association to help continue to promote awareness surrounding issues of maternal and child health.

Damali Campbell, MD
SECRETARY

Dr. Damali Campbell Oparaji, MD is a board-certified physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Addiction Medicine. Currently a faculty member at the Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health, Dr. Campbell Oparaji for almost 2 decades has been dedicated to her practice to improve the care for women in underserved areas. Since graduation from residency training she has worked in New Jersey urban areas including Jersey City, Paterson and Newark. Her special interests within women’s health include health education which led her to implementing Centering Pregnancy at an ambulatory care center, as well as, promoting and supporting breastfeeding. Additionally, she is interested in how addressing social determinants of health can help improve outcomes. Her desire to understand and better serve women with substance abuse problems led her to seek additional training and certification in addiction medicine- since that certification. She has started a new clinic in her facility “New beginnings” for women with all substance use disorders including nicotine dependence. Her goals are to find innovative and diverse ways to improve maternal and women’s care.

Juana Hutchinson, MD, MBA
TREASURER

Juana Hutchinson-Colas, MD, MBA is an Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS). Dr. Hutchinson-Colas is also the co-director of the Pelvic Floor Program at RWJMS and the Chief of Gynecology services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. She is a quality Champion for Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group and an active member of the Quality Committee of the American Urogynecologic Society (2016 – 2019). Dr. Hutchinson-Colas is passionate about mentoring, postgraduate education and pelvic floor health. Prior to joining the faculty at RWJMS in 2008, she was the Ob/Gyn Clerkship director for 6 years, and the interim chair for the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for 3 years at Jersey City Medical Center/Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
