TULiP Technology Breakthrough Competition

About Our App:

  • Overview

The Women’s Health Institute (WHI) at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) are partnering with the community-based non-profit organization New Jersey Black Women Physicians Association. Together we are developing an app, called TULiP that aims to improve healthcare equity, particularly for Black residents in New Jersey. One of the struggles that Black residents face is finding a physician whom they trust.

  • TULiP App

Since 2019, policymakers from more than 50 American municipalities and three states have called to identify racism as a public health crisis. And on September 3, 2020, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) introduced the Anti-Racism in Public Health Act in Congress. Our response to this call is to address the issue of confronting systemic racism in healthcare. Led by Black women physicians, our team is developing a mobile app called “TULiP'' which stands for Technology Uniting Like-minded Physicians and Patients. The goal of TULiP is to address incompatible patient-provider interactions that subsequently result in poorer healthcare outcomes for BIPOC communities. Our objective with TULiP is to improve clinical racial competence and connect residents with racially congruent providers. This app, starting off as a directory of Black physicians based in New Jersey, will expand to consumers and physicians nation-wide contingent on additional funding, research, and development. Our team is currently studying Black patient preferences in regards to physician characteristics. After analyzing these research results, the end-goal of TULiP is to serve as a directory of culturally humble physicians of any race that the Black community can effectively find doctors to support their needs.

  • TULiP Technology

TULiP currently has 4 digital assets: An internal Admin Site, Physician Website and Two Patient Mobile applications (iOS and Android). The current Technology stack is built on React and React Native and Node.js and PostgreSQL for the database. We use third party applications for server hosting, and data capture.

THE COMPETITION MISSION

Innovation Meets Access.

We are hosting a pitch competition that allows students to pitch ways to improve the app. Students can pitch ideas that may improve the user experience, allow the app to communicate with other technology, or add new functions to the app. Our focus is on accessibility. Accessibility is a major concern in healthcare today and the concept of the app is to give New Jersey residents an easier way to reach a doctor. However, we are looking for an idea that can expand that accessibility to make the app more user-friendly or to reach those who struggle with accessibility issues in some way. These ideas will be presented in video format and shown to a panel of judges in the Rutgers technology and business fields.

We are expecting teams to identify an accessibility concern and develop a feasible technological solution that can expand the app or allow the app to communicate with other technological mediums. Examples include technology that addresses accessibility issues in the blind or Deaf/HOH community, a way for the app to work on an Apple Watch, or adding other capabilities. We at TULiP encourage any and all ideas, conventional and unconventional. The teams are not only expected to develop the idea but the technology itself. The winners would work with the TULiP team to implement the technology.

Criteria.

Your Team

Competitors can apply as an individual or as a team. We are focusing on women in STEM so we are looking for women or non-binary persons if applying as an individual. If applying as a team, the team should be 75% women and the project lead should be a woman. We will collaborate with the winning team to implement their suggested changes and provide winners a cash prize. The winning idea will be presented at the Wellness In Bloom TULiP app launch event this year.

Expectations

The winners of the pitch competition will receive a monetary prize. 50% of the prize will be awarded upon winning and the other 50% will be awarded upon completion of the technology. Winners will be recognized at the TULiP app event and will be listed as a contributor to the app.

Legal

By submitting a pitch, the team is agreeing to completing and providing the technology to TULiP. The New Jersey Black Women Physician Association will have ownership of this technology. Formal terms and conditions are to follow.

Deliverables

We are asking individuals or teams to pitch their idea of a technological innovation that could increase the accessibility or function of the TULiP app. This idea could be an app modification, integration with other platforms, or any other innovation that uses existing forms of technology. Included should be:

  • Video pitch presentation, no longer than 10 minutes, including a visual aid of your choice and 1-2 minutes spent on discussing the accessibility concern

  • A prototype of the technology displaying that it is feasible to create

  • This form returned with the names and signatures of each team member.

The video and prototype are due by Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 11:59pm. They should be submitted via Google Form. Pitches will be graded off the attached rubric.
